Ligny Pt2

And so the first moves begin with French advances on the villages of St Hamand and Ligny.

The Divisions of Girard and & Vandamme start their attack on St Hamand

St Hamand is defended by vintage HH Prussians. The French troops are HH and Kennington.

The first French casualties, Ambulance and figures by Fine Scale Factory.

Prussian musketry waits the approaching French battalions on the East side of St Hamand

The assault on Ligny begins

Gerard's artillery start to attack their opposite numbers across the brook. Howitzers on the left are Qualiticast.

The Ligny bridge is defended by Landwehr

  1. Ooh! So many pretty troops. That clash over the bridge is going to be a nasty one! Hope the Prussians have a good defensive modifier in the buildings as they are looking decidedly out numbered!

  2. They do indeed have an advantage but the Landwehr suffer a bit because of their lower moral rating. I'm several moves on in the game now and, as you will see in future posts, the villages are being hotly contested. The Prussians have uncommitted reserves....but then so do the French!!

  3. I agree with David, that's a pretty impressive attack going, I think I'd be running if I were Prussian. How big is your table? The edge doesn't seem to appear much in your photos.

  4. The table is 7x5ft Rob. I'll post a snap later to show you what I've got to play with...if only I had a larger man cave!

    1. Mine's not much bigger at 10'x5' and the extra width doesn't add that much for most games, a 9'x6' would be better but leave players pinned against the wall.

  5. I'm not sure I fancy the first French wave's chances at Ligny at all unless that artillery really kicks into action. This is starting to look very exciting!. Can you tell us a bit more about the rules and what the keys elements of them are?

    1. Sorry, just seen your request. In a nutshell, Skako rules have 5 move phases: Artillery (simultaneous), Movement, Small Arms (simultaneous), Melee, & Command (reissue orders, rally units etc). Each unit has a morale rating and disordered rating, the latter being applied when e.g. staggered. So for example a French line unit would be 4/1, Guard 6/1. Casualties are taken off each frontal morale value until their max is reached. Victory is achieved when 50% of the opponents original army units have been removed. Of course there are many more detailed elements and optional rules, some of which I choose not to use as they slow things down too much for me as a solo player. Of all the rules I have tried over the years they have worked the best for me and, as I perhaps have maybe one or 2 games a year they are fairly easy to remember without endless studying of the rule book.
